The Guest Speakers

Our Host, Justin Moorhouse

Justin is Manchester Key 103's award winning 'Afternoon Show' presenter and a sell out stand up comedian. His radio show continues to go from strength to strength. His warmth, charisma and quick-witted spontaneity have proved a huge hit with listeners and radio industry officials alike, and he’s clocked up nominations for the highly prized ‘DJ Of The Year’ at the Sony Awards and ‘Presenter of the Year’ in the Commercial Radio Awards. His show was also nominated in the 2006 Sony Radio Academy Awards for the ‘Interactive Programme Award’ with Judges describing Justin as ‘cheeky, funny and irreverent’.

On TV screens, Justin is perhaps most recognisable as Young Kenny in the hugely successful, award-winning ‘Phoenix Nights’. He spent the whole of the second series with his face painted as a tiger and also made a brief appearance in the spin-of series ‘Max & Paddy’s Road To Nowhere’. Other recent TV appearances include ‘The Charlotte Church Show’ (Ch4), ‘8 Out of 10 Cats’ (Ch 4), ‘The Grumpy Guides’ (BBC 2) ‘Shameless’ (E4), ‘The Live Floor Show’ (BBC 2), ‘Does Doug Know’ (Ch 4), ‘Stan The Man’ (Granada), ‘Buried’ (Ch 4), ‘Massive’ (BBC Three) and ‘The World Stands Up’ and ‘The Comedy Store’ (Paramount). He has also presented a Friday night entertainment show ‘Talk of the Town’, (Granada) and ‘Twisted TV’ (Challenge). He has recently landed a lead role in the forthcoming film from the legendary Ken Loach, ‘Looking for Eric’ which is set to hit the big screen later this year.

Justin is now in great demand as a stand-up, actor, writer, TV and radio presenter, voiceover artiste and corporate performer and is busy developing several original ideas for radio television – as well as gearing up for his autumn tour and presenting a live daily radio show.

We are delighted to have Justin as our host for the evening.

Introduction by Richard Hytner

Richard is Deputy Chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide and a United fan through and through. In 1998, along with Michael Crick and a handful of other Manchester United shareholders, he became one of the founding members of Shareholders United Against Murdoch which became Shareholders United in 1999 and was transformed into MUST - the independent Manchester United Supporters' Trust in 2005.

After Dinner Speaker - Wilf McGuinness

Wilf McGuinness is Manchester through and through. Brought up in Collyhurst, his love of football included both City and United, until he signed for the Reds as an England Schoolboy International in 1953. He was Sir Bobby Charlton's Captain, for England Schools and one of the famous Busby Babes under Sir Matt and his assistant Jimmy Murphy. A full international with England, he famously remarked that Bobby Charlton and Wilf have 108 Caps between them, Bobby got 106! When he was 22, a broken leg finished his career and he became a Coach at United. He was also asked by the FA to coach the England Youth Squad to a Junior World Cup win in 1964, a team that included Tommy Smith, John Sissons & Jon Samuels. He also helped Sir Alf Ramsay train the 1966 England Squad at Lilleshall, prior to the World Cup and was there at Wembley Stadium as we lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy in the historic win over West Germany. When Sir Matt retired in 1970, he personally selected Wilf to manage Manchester United, a dream for a young coach of 31 years of age. Although Wilf took United to 7 Cup Semi-Final games in 18 months, following in the footsteps of the great man, this was not judged to be sufficient for Manchester United and Wilf was asked to resign.

As the only United player to have gone on to manage the club we are delighted that Wilf has agreed to share with us his memories of Sir Matt and his days as a player and manager of the greatest club in the world.

The Panel

A panel of United greats and Sir Matt's son, Sandy will answer questions and reminisce about the Great Man.

Alex Stepney
ALEX STEPNEY
Albert Scanlon
ALBERT SCANLON

Born in Mitchum, Surrey in September 1942, Alex was signed for £55,000 - then a world record fee for a 'keeper- from Chelsea, in the 1966/67 campaign, which was to end with the Championship pennant flying at Old Trafford. Rated as one of England's leading 'keepers, his assurance in the United halls of immortality came in one heart-stopping moment at Wembley in 1968, in the European Cup Final. Extra time loomed as United and Benfica were one apiece. Eusebio outstripped the United defence and found himself with only Alex between him and glory. Eusebio shot, Alex dived, caught the ball and United went on to reach the end of the rainbow!

For 12 years, under 5 different managers, his name was synonymous with that of United. Even after he plied his trade elsewhere, United remained in his heart. His favourite player was George Best. Alex agreed to become a Patron because he wants to help carry on the tradition of United, as a club for the supporters.

Born 10 October 1935 in Manchester, Albert came through the Manchester United youth system, making his debut for the club in 1954. He would help the club to two league titles (1956 and 1957) scoring 35 goals in his career, including 16 in 1959.

At the age of 22, he suffered a fractured skull, a broken leg and kidney problems in the Munich air disaster, but made a full recovery and was back in action at the start of the 1958-59 season.

He was about to sign for Arsenal just before the air crash, but the projected transfer was then cancelled.

Albert left United for Newcastle United in 1960, but his time on Tyneside was not a success and he then dropped down to a lower level to play for Lincoln City, Mansfield Town and finally Newport County, before retiring as a player in 1966.

David Sadler
DAVID SADLER

Sandy Busby
SANDY BUSBY

David Sadler (born 5 February 1946 in Yalding, Kent, England) was a skilful central defender who could also play usefully in midfield or even as a forward. He is currently secretary of the Manchester United Former Players' Association.

David started his professional career with Manchester United in 1963, helping the club win the 1965 and 1967 First Division Football League championships as well as the 1968 European Cup. He left United in 1974 after scoring 27 goals for the club to join Preston North End, who were being managed by Sadler's former team-mate Bobby Charlton.

He made 121 appearances (including 1 as substitute) for the Deepdale club and scored 4 goals before retiring due to injury in 1977.

The son of the legendary Sir Matt, Sandy is a “Red” born and bred. He has supported, worked for and loved the club all his life.

Sandy spent many years running the old souvenir shop. He is also an ex football player in his own right having played for Blackburn Rovers. He lives near Manchester and attends home matches, sitting in Sir Matt's old seat.

Sandy is retired now and enjoys golf, when he isn't watching United.

Harry Gregg
HARRY GREGG

As one of the mighty Legends of United, Harry needs very little introduction to supporters. Born on 27th October 1932, in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, Harry arrived at Old Trafford bearing the tag of The World's Most Expensive Goalkeeper. Prior to leaving Ireland, he was capped at every level, schoolboy, youth, amateur and Inter-League.Strangely, in nine years at United, the only medal he ever won was an F.A.Cup Runners Up medal from the cup final in 1958.

As we all know, Harry was a survivor of the Munich disaster, showing unbelievable bravery, saving a 20-month-old baby, a pregnant woman, and trying to revive Sir Matt Busby. He was part of the patchwork team that Jimmy Murphy built after the crash. Even after a horrific shoulder injury, when surgeons said he might never play again, he battled back to fitness, to play against Benfica seven months later. The death of his first wife, Mavis, was a shattering blow, which took a heavy toll. Although Harry was once again United's first choice goalkeeper, he suffered injuries and a very bad car crash, missing most of the 64/65 season, but remained in the first team until Alex Stepney was bought in 1966. In a playing career, which spanned almost two decades, he won 25 International caps for Northern Ireland, assisting his country to the quarter finals of the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, where he was voted the tournament's best keeper.

In 1995, Harry was rewarded by his country, receiving an M.B.E in the Queens Birthday Honours List, which he accepted on behalf of the many friends who perished at Munich.

Harry's appearance at the SMB100 Gala Dinner is to be confirmed.
